Order Picker Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia

An order picker is a warehouse truck whose operator platform rises with the forks, so that the operator can pick individual items or cartons from racking at height. They are used in distribution centres, e-commerce warehouses and spare-parts stores across Saudi Arabia. The operator is lifted with the load, so independent inspection puts particular weight on the platform, fall protection, emergency lowering and height-related safety functions.

What we inspect on an order picker

  • ✓Operator platform, gate or chain, guardrails and floor checked for damage, secure latching and slip resistance
  • ✓Fall protection anchor points and lanyard or harness provision checked, and confirmed as required by the site
  • ✓Operator presence pedal or foot switch tested, so the platform will not lift or travel without the operator in place
  • ✓Emergency lowering and emergency stop functions tested from both the platform and ground level
  • ✓Mast channels, rollers, lift chains and guard checked for wear and damage
  • ✓Travel speed reduction when the platform is elevated and height cut-outs tested for correct operation
  • ✓Aisle guidance, such as wire or rail, and guide rollers checked for wear and function, where fitted
  • ✓Brakes, steering, battery and capacity plate, including platform capacity, examined for condition and correctness

Common defects we find

  • ✓Platform gate or chain not latching or missing
  • ✓Emergency lowering not working from the ground controls
  • ✓Speed limitation when elevated bypassed or faulty
  • ✓Worn mast rollers and lift chains giving platform sway
  • ✓Lanyard anchor points damaged or missing

Risks of operating uncertified

  • ✓Operator falling from an elevated platform if guarding or fall protection is missing or defective
  • ✓Operator trapped or crushed between the platform and racking if emergency lowering fails
  • ✓Truck leaning or tipping when driven at speed with the platform raised

Testing, standards & frequency

Load / performance test

A load test with certified weights on the forks and platform is typically carried out at 100% of the rated capacity, and sometimes higher depending on the standard and client. The test covers lift and lower to maximum height, drift, braking, emergency lowering and the height-related speed limits.

Inspection interval

Typically at least annually, and more often for multi-shift warehouse use or where client, insurer or site rules require.

Standards referenced

  • ANSI/ITSDF B56.1 (low lift and high lift trucks)
  • ISO 3691-3 (industrial trucks, additional requirements for trucks with elevating operator position)
  • OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178 (powered industrial trucks)
  • Manufacturer specifications and load charts

FAQs

Do order picker operators need a harness?+

Many manufacturers and site rules require operators to wear a harness attached to a designated anchor point when the platform is elevated. The requirement should be confirmed against the manufacturer's manual and the site safety procedure.

What is the difference between an order picker and a reach truck?+

On an order picker the operator is lifted with the platform to pick items by hand. On a reach truck the operator stays near ground level and the mast reaches forward to place whole pallets into racking.
