Electric Forklift Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia

An electric forklift is a battery-powered counterbalance truck with traction and pump motors in place of an engine, suited to warehouses, food and pharmaceutical stores and indoor production areas. Their lead-acid or lithium battery packs make up a large part of the counterweight and bring electrical and charging hazards that diesel trucks do not have. Independent inspection verifies the battery system, motor controls and braking as well as the mast and forks, so the truck is safe both to charge and to operate.

What we inspect on an electric forklift

  • ✓Battery case, cell covers, terminals and cables checked for corrosion, damaged insulation, electrolyte leakage and a secure battery restraint, plus the battery management system and fault indications on lithium-ion packs
  • ✓Battery connector, contactors and fuses inspected for burning, pitting and loose connections
  • ✓Traction and pump motor controllers tested for smooth acceleration, regenerative braking and fault-free operation
  • ✓Battery discharge indicator and lift-interrupt function checked, so lifting is cut off before deep discharge
  • ✓Charger and charging area reviewed for ventilation, eyewash or spill provisions and correct charger-to-battery matching
  • ✓Electromagnetic parking brake and service brake tested, with the foot-pedal and seat or operator-presence switches confirmed working
  • ✓Accelerator and direction controls checked for micro-switch failures and sticking
  • ✓Pump motor and hydraulic circuit checked for lift and lower speeds against manufacturer data, with lift chains, mast rollers and fork arms examined for wear

Common defects we find

  • ✓Damaged or corroded battery terminals and cables with exposed conductors
  • ✓Battery not properly restrained, or the wrong battery weight fitted compared with the data plate
  • ✓Worn or burnt contactors causing jerky travel or loss of drive
  • ✓Faulty accelerator or direction switch giving unintended movement
  • ✓Seat or presence switch bypassed or inoperative

Risks of operating uncertified

  • ✓Acid burns or hydrogen ignition during battery charging and maintenance in poorly ventilated areas
  • ✓Electric shock or fire from damaged high-current cabling and connectors
  • ✓Unintended truck movement caused by a faulty controller or bypassed safety switch

Testing, standards & frequency

Load / performance test

A load test with certified weights is typically carried out at 100% of the rated capacity, and sometimes higher depending on the standard and client. It checks lift and lower speed, mast drift, braking with the load, and the power draw behaviour of the battery and controller during the test.

Inspection interval

Typically at least annually, with more frequent checks of battery and charging equipment where client rules, multi-shift use or manufacturer guidance require.

Standards referenced

  • ANSI/ITSDF B56.1 (low lift and high lift trucks)
  • ISO 3691-1 (industrial trucks, safety requirements and verification)
  • OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178 (powered industrial trucks, including battery charging provisions)
  • Manufacturer specifications and load charts

FAQs

Is the battery included when an electric forklift is inspected?+

It should be. The battery weight is part of the truck's stability, and the case, cables, restraint and charging arrangements are common sources of faults, so a competent inspection covers them together with the mast and brakes.

Can an electric forklift be used outdoors in the Saudi climate?+

Only if it is built for it. Standard indoor trucks are sensitive to heat, dust and wet ground, so the manufacturer's rating and the tyre type should be confirmed before the truck is used in yards or on uneven surfaces.
