Telehandler Inspection & Certification in NEOM
A telehandler is a rough-terrain machine with a telescopic boom that carries forks or other attachments, letting it place loads at height and at a distance in front of the machine. Telehandlers are used widely on Saudi construction sites for placing blocks, pipes, cladding and trusses, and some are used with approved personnel baskets. A competent inspection confirms the boom, load moment system and attachments are in good order, because the safe capacity changes continually with boom angle and extension. The giga-project in north-west Saudi Arabia, mobilising vast fleets of heavy equipment and workers.
Telehandler inspection in NEOM: local context
Materials reach NEOM over long road hauls and, where port facilities are available, by sea, then move through laydown yards, warehouses and the port area at Oxagon, keeping forklifts, telehandlers and reach stackers in near-constant use. EES inspects masts, forks, chains, brakes and load charts on site and can plan checks around shift patterns so deliveries and site logistics keep moving.
Telehandler inspection scope in NEOM
- ✓Boom sections, wear pads and telescoping mechanism checked for wear, side play and cracks, especially around pivot points
- ✓Boom pivot pins, lift cylinder pins and retaining hardware examined for wear, security and lubrication
- ✓Load moment indicator or longitudinal load moment system tested for correct warning and cut-off at the chart limits
- ✓Load chart in the cab verified against the attachment fitted and visible to the operator
- ✓Quick-hitch carriage and attachment locking pins checked for positive engagement, with the lock alarm or indicator tested
- ✓Stabilisers or outriggers, where fitted, and frame levelling checked for correct operation and leakage
- ✓Hydraulic hoses along and inside the boom checked for chafing, kinks and leaks at fittings
- ✓Boom angle and length sensors, travel alarm, ROPS or FOPS cab and seat belt confirmed in working order
Defects commonly found
- ✓Worn boom wear pads causing boom droop or side play
- ✓Load moment indicator out of calibration or deliberately bypassed
- ✓Worn quick-hitch locks and attachment pins that allow the attachment to detach
- ✓Hose chafing and leaks along the boom
- ✓Load chart missing or not matching the attachment in use
Standards
- ✓ANSI/ITSDF B56.6 (rough terrain forklift trucks)
- ✓EN 1459 (rough-terrain variable-reach trucks)
- ✓ISO 3691-2 (variable-reach trucks, safety requirements)
- ✓Manufacturer specifications and load charts
Testing
A load test typically uses certified weights at several boom angle and extension points taken from the manufacturer's load chart, often at 100% of the chart capacity and in some cases up to 110% or 125% depending on the standard and client. The test includes a function check of the load moment indicator, cut-off and boom movements.
Frequency
Typically at least annually, with pre-mobilisation checks and more frequent re-inspection for heavy use, attachment changes or where client rules require.

FAQs
Can you inspect a telehandler on site in NEOM?+

Does a telehandler need a load test or only a visual inspection?+
Many construction and industrial clients in Saudi Arabia require a load test on first mobilisation and at the periodic inspection, because the boom and load moment system can only be verified under load. A visual inspection alone will not show an out-of-calibration cut-off.
Can a telehandler be used with a man basket?+
Only if the manufacturer approves the machine and platform combination, and the site work procedure allows it. The attachment, basket and controls need separate inspection and the machine must have a dedicated load chart for that use.
