Side Loader Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia
A side loader is a forklift-type truck whose mast and forks extend sideways from the chassis to pick up long loads such as steel pipe, rebar, beams, GRP pipe and timber, which are then carried on a platform alongside the operator. Side loaders are used in Saudi pipe yards, steel stockholders and fabrication shops where long loads would not fit through aisles on a conventional forklift. Inspection concentrates on the load platform, side-mounted mast and stability with overhanging loads.
What we inspect on a side loader
- ✓Load platform deck, stanchions and securing points checked for cracks, bending and weld repairs
- ✓Sideways mast traverse rails, rollers and extension cylinders checked for wear, play and leaks, with fork arms inspected for bending and heel wear
- ✓Lift chains and cylinders on the side-working mast checked for elongation, leaks and drift
- ✓Chassis, outriggers or stabiliser legs, if fitted, tested for correct deployment and holding pressure
- ✓Steering and drive system checked, including any multi-directional or four-way steering function
- ✓Service and parking brakes tested, with attention to a laden platform braking behaviour
- ✓Operator seat, protective cab and visibility aids examined, since sight lines are limited with long loads alongside
- ✓Capacity plate and any chart for load length and overhang confirmed as present and appropriate
Common defects we find
- ✓Bent or cracked platform stanchions and securing points
- ✓Worn traverse rollers or rails letting the mast rock when extended sideways under load
- ✓Outrigger or stabiliser leg leakage and failure to hold
- ✓Worn steering components causing wandering with a long load
- ✓Missing or incorrect capacity and overhang markings
Risks of operating uncertified
- ✓Tip-over when long or overhanging loads shift or the truck turns at speed
- ✓Long loads sliding off the platform and striking people or structures in the yard
- ✓Operator or pedestrian collisions caused by restricted visibility to the side
Testing, standards & frequency
Load / performance test
A load test is typically carried out with certified weights placed on the platform or fork at 100% of the rated capacity, and some procedures call for a higher proof load depending on the standard and client. The test includes mast lift and lower, travel and braking with the load, and a stability check at the load length stated on the data plate.
Inspection interval
Typically at least annually, with pre-mobilisation checks and more frequent re-inspection for heavy yard use or where client rules require.
Standards referenced
- ANSI/ITSDF B56.1 (low lift and high lift trucks)
- ISO 3691-1 (industrial trucks, safety requirements and verification)

FAQs
What loads is a side loader designed for?+
It is designed for long, slender loads such as pipes, rebar, steel sections and timber that are awkward on a conventional forklift. The maximum load length and overhang are set by the manufacturer and should be stated on the capacity plate.
Is a side loader forklift the same as a container side lifter?+
No. A side loader forklift carries long loads on a platform beside the operator, whereas a container side lifter is a trailer-mounted unit with two hydraulic lifting arms that pick up containers from the side. They have different inspection requirements.
