Wire Rope Inspection & Certification in NEOM

Wire rope is the stranded steel rope used as hoist, luffing, boom hoist and pendant rope on cranes, and in winches, lifts, draglines and rigging. Constructions such as 6x36 steel-core and rotation-resistant 19x7 or 35x7 ropes are selected for the duty, and they wear differently depending on sheave size, bending cycles and the environment. Degradation builds up inside the strands where it cannot be seen, so periodic examination against a recognised discard standard, supported by non-destructive testing where justified, is how owners decide when to replace a rope. The giga-project in north-west Saudi Arabia, mobilising vast fleets of heavy equipment and workers.

Wire Rope inspection in NEOM: local context

Structural steel, prefabricated components and heavy plant arrive at NEOM in volume, and each piece is slung, shackled and set by rigging crews whose gear is exposed to strong UV, heat and salt air. UV and heat degrade webbing, wire rope corrodes and hardware wears, so EES inspects slings, shackles, hooks and spreader beams on site, tags what passes and recommends withdrawing what does not.

Wire Rope inspection scope in NEOM

  • ✓Broken wires counted over defined rope lengths, with separate counts for outer wires, valley breaks and wires at terminations
  • ✓Reduction in rope diameter measured against nominal at several positions along the rope
  • ✓Corrosion on the surface and, where accessible, internal corrosion between the strands
  • ✓Deformations such as kinks, bird-caging, waviness, core protrusion and flattened sections
  • ✓Wear and crushing in the spooling zone, at sheaves and where the rope crosses over itself on the drum
  • ✓Heat or arc damage, with discolouration and metal splash on the wires
  • ✓Lubrication condition and the end terminations, including sockets, wedges and clips
  • ✓Where justified, magnetic rope testing to detect loss of metallic area and internal damage

Defects commonly found

  • ✓Broken wires exceeding the discard allowance, especially at crossover points and in the valleys
  • ✓Diameter loss from core deterioration or internal wear
  • ✓Kinks, bird-caging or flattening from shock loads, spooling errors or damaged sheaves
  • ✓Corrosion pitting and dried-out lubrication from poor maintenance in hot, humid and dusty conditions
  • ✓Damaged terminations such as slipped wedge sockets or cracked ferrules

Standards

  • ✓ISO 4309 (Cranes - Wire ropes - Care and maintenance, inspection and discard)
  • ✓ASME B30.5 (Mobile and Locomotive Cranes)
  • ✓EN 12385 (Steel wire ropes - Safety)
  • ✓Manufacturer specifications and load charts

Testing

Not applicable: wire rope in service is not load tested in isolation; its condition is judged by visual examination, diameter measurement and, where justified, magnetic rope testing, while ropes on cranes are proven within the crane's rated load test and a breaking-force test on a removed sample can be used to verify strength.

Frequency

Typically a visual examination of the rope each working day or before use, with a documented periodic inspection at least annually and shorter intervals depending on rope duty, crane classification and site rules.

FAQs

Can you inspect a wire rope on site in NEOM?+

Yes. Our inspectors travel to your yard or project site in NEOM, including The Line, Oxagon and Sindalah, so the equipment does not need to be moved.

Which industries in NEOM request wire rope inspection?+

Typically operators and contractors in the Tabuk Province from these sectors: Vision 2030 Mega-Projects; Construction & Infrastructure; Ports, Logistics & Warehousing.

When must a crane wire rope be replaced?+

When it reaches the discard criteria in the standard or the crane manufacturer's manual, such as a set number of broken wires in a given length, loss of diameter, corrosion, kinks or bird-caging. Examiners record the findings and often recommend replacement ahead of the limit if deterioration is rapid.

What is magnetic rope testing and when is it needed?+

A sensor head is passed along the rope to detect loss of metallic cross-section and broken wires, including those inside the rope that cannot be seen. It is typically used on long, critical or hard-to-inspect ropes, such as those on large cranes, to support decisions about remaining life.
