Shackle Inspection & Certification in NEOM
A shackle is a U-shaped forged steel connector closed with a pin, used to join slings, hoist rings, hooks and rigging in lifting, towing and anchoring. Dee and bow patterns, with screw pins or bolt, nut and split pin, are found across Saudi construction, offshore support, marine and oil and gas sites. Shackles are small and often reused without records, so an independent examination that checks the marking, the pin and the body geometry catches worn, bent or mismatched shackles before they reach a critical lift. The giga-project in north-west Saudi Arabia, mobilising vast fleets of heavy equipment and workers.
Shackle inspection in NEOM: local context
Structural steel, prefabricated components and heavy plant arrive at NEOM in volume, and each piece is slung, shackled and set by rigging crews whose gear is exposed to strong UV, heat and salt air. UV and heat degrade webbing, wire rope corrodes and hardware wears, so EES inspects slings, shackles, hooks and spreader beams on site, tags what passes and recommends withdrawing what does not.
Shackle inspection scope in NEOM
- ✓Body for wear at the crown and the bow where the sling bears, and for ovality or spreading of the legs
- ✓Pin straightness, thread condition, shank wear and fit, confirming it is the original pin made for that shackle
- ✓Nut, split pin or locking arrangement on bolt-type shackles
- ✓Cracks, nicks, gouges and weld repairs, with magnetic particle inspection when there is doubt
- ✓Distortion of the eye holes and opening of the legs
- ✓Markings showing WLL, size, manufacturer, grade and traceability code
- ✓Screw pin fully engaged and the collar seated against the shackle ear
- ✓Corrosion pitting and loss of galvanising, particularly in coastal and marine service
Defects commonly found
- ✓Crown or pin worn so that the cross-section is reduced
- ✓Bent or stretched pin, or a pin replaced with a non-matching bolt
- ✓Legs spread or body twisted from side loading or overload
- ✓Stripped pin threads, or a missing nut or split pin on bolt-type shackles
- ✓Missing or illegible WLL marking
Standards
- ✓ASME B30.26 (Rigging Hardware)
- ✓EN 13889 (Forged steel shackles for general lifting purposes)
- ✓Manufacturer specifications and load charts
Testing
Where required for new, repaired or certified lots, a proof load test is typically applied at around twice the working load limit depending on the standard and client, with magnetic particle inspection added where cracking is suspected.
Frequency
Typically examined at least annually, with a pre-use visual check by the rigger, and more frequent re-inspection where client or site rules require it.

FAQs
Can you inspect a shackle on site in NEOM?+
Yes. Our inspectors travel to your yard or project site in NEOM, including The Line, Oxagon and Sindalah, so the equipment does not need to be moved.
Which industries in NEOM request shackle inspection?+
Typically operators and contractors in the Tabuk Province from these sectors: Vision 2030 Mega-Projects; Construction & Infrastructure; Ports, Logistics & Warehousing.
Can I replace a lost shackle pin with a bolt from the store?+
No. The pin is a rated part of the shackle, and an ordinary bolt may not match its strength, diameter or fit. Use only the original or manufacturer-supplied pin, or replace the whole shackle.
What does the WLL on a shackle mean?+
WLL is the working load limit, the maximum load the shackle is designed to carry in normal service when loaded in line, with a safety margin built in. The usable capacity falls if the shackle is side loaded or the sling angle is wide, so check the manufacturer's guidance.
