🔩 Piling & Drilling Rigs
Rotary Drilling Rig Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia
A rotary drilling rig turns a drilling tool, such as an auger, bucket or core barrel, on a kelly bar or continuous flight auger to bore holes for cast-in-place piles, shafts and geotechnical investigation. In Saudi Arabia these rigs are used on bridge and viaduct foundations, tower and plant piles, and for boreholes in rock and cemented soils. The rotary head, kelly bar and drive train carry high torque and cyclic loads, so independent inspection helps expose wear and hidden cracks before they cause a failure at depth.
What we inspect on a rotary drilling rig
- ✓Rotary head gearbox, drive motors and output flange for oil leaks, play, and abnormal noise or heat
- ✓Kelly bar sections, drive keys and stops, and the main winch rope and swivel that carry the kelly bar, for wear and deformation
- ✓Pull-down or crowd system, including crowd cylinders, chains or ropes, and leader guide wear
- ✓Drilling tools: auger flights, bucket doors and latches, cutting teeth and holders, and the weld integrity of connections
- ✓Rotary head torque and speed and crowd force, checked against manufacturer data
- ✓Main winch rope, sheaves and rope terminations against ISO 4309 criteria
- ✓Mast alignment sensors and the depth measurement system used for pile verticality and toe level records
- ✓Relief valve settings, hoses and leakage around the rotary and crowd hydraulic circuits
Common defects we find
- ✓Worn kelly bar drive keys and kelly stops that reduce positive engagement
- ✓Cracks at auger flight welds or on bucket hinge and latch components
- ✓Leaking rotary head seals or contaminated gearbox oil
- ✓Bent or damaged kelly bar sections that no longer telescope freely
- ✓Depth encoder or inclinometer faults that give wrong depth or verticality readings
Risks of operating uncertified
- ✓A dropped kelly bar or drilling tool after a latch, rope or key failure
- ✓Entanglement or crush injuries from rotating augers and kelly bars close to personnel
- ✓Rig instability if the mast is out of plumb or overloaded by pull-back and torque reaction on weak ground
Testing, standards & frequency
Load / performance test
A performance test is typically carried out: rotary head torque and speed, crowd force and winch line pull are verified against manufacturer data, with winch holding tests at 100%-125% of rated capacity depending on the standard and client.
Inspection interval
Typically at least annually, with a check before mobilisation and after gearbox rebuilds, major repairs or relocation, and more often where client or site rules require.

FAQs
Is a rotary bored pile rig inspected differently from a standard piling rig?+
The carrier and mast checks are similar, but a rotary rig also needs detailed examination of the rotary head, kelly bar, drive keys and drilling tools, which wear quickly under torque. These parts are covered in the same inspection.
Do drilling tools such as augers and buckets need to be inspected too?+
Yes. Buckets, augers, teeth holders and kelly bar connections are checked for cracks, wear and latch condition, because a failed tool can drop down the borehole or injure crew when it is lifted above ground.
