🔩 Piling & Drilling Rigs
Piling Rig Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia
A piling rig is a crawler-mounted foundation machine with a leader or mast used to drive, bore or screw piles for buildings, bridges, storage tanks and industrial plants. In Saudi Arabia these rigs work on mega-project foundations, port and industrial-city developments and the soft coastal sabkha ground of the Eastern Province, where deep piles are common. Because the mast, winches and carrier carry high overturning loads on soft or uneven ground, an independent inspection before mobilisation helps contractors and clients confirm the rig is structurally sound and its safety devices work.
What we inspect on a piling rig
- ✓Mast or leader sections, mast-foot pins and bushings, and the backstay or raising cylinders, for cracks, bending and pin wear
- ✓Slew ring bolts, slew bearing play and the swing drive for looseness or abnormal backlash
- ✓Crawler undercarriage: track shoes, rollers, idlers, sprockets, track tensioners and carbody frame for wear and cracks
- ✓Main and auxiliary winch drums, brakes, rope spooling and wire rope condition against ISO 4309 discard criteria
- ✓Mast inclination sensors, level indicators and mast-angle limit settings used to hold pile verticality
- ✓Hydraulic hoses, cylinders, manifolds and pump or motor leakage, including hose routing near moving parts
- ✓Operator cab structure, emergency stops, travel alarm, hoist limit switches and overload warnings
- ✓Counterweight and ballast fixings, access ladders, guarding and fall-protection points on the mast
Common defects we find
- ✓Cracked welds at mast-foot brackets and leader section joints
- ✓Worn or oval mast-foot pins and bushings that let the mast geometry move
- ✓Abraded hydraulic hoses or leaking rod seals on the mast-raise circuit
- ✓Winch wire rope with broken wires, flattening or drum crushing from poor spooling
- ✓Inoperative or bypassed mast-angle limit and overload alarms
Risks of operating uncertified
- ✓Mast collapse or rig overturning on soft or sloping ground, endangering the crew and nearby structures
- ✓A dropped pile, tool or load after a winch rope, brake or rope termination fails
- ✓Uncontrolled mast lowering after a hose or holding-valve failure on the raise circuit
Testing, standards & frequency
Load / performance test
Where the winch is used for lifting, a line-pull and brake holding test is typically carried out at 100%-125% of rated capacity depending on the standard and client, together with mast raise and lower function checks and pressure checks of the main hydraulic circuits.
Inspection interval
Typically at least annually, with a pre-mobilisation inspection on arrival at a new site and more frequent re-inspection where client or site rules require.
Standards referenced
- ASME B30.5 (where the rig is crane-based or used in lifting service)
- EN 16228 (Drilling and foundation equipment - Safety)
- ISO 4309 (wire rope care, inspection and discard)
- Manufacturer specifications and load charts

FAQs
Does a piling rig need a third-party inspection certificate before starting work in Saudi Arabia?+
Many main contractors and clients, particularly on Aramco-linked and mega-project sites, ask for a valid third-party inspection certificate before a piling rig is allowed to mobilise. Requirements differ by client, so check the project HSE specification.
Can a piling rig be inspected on the project site?+
Yes. Rigs are normally inspected where they are working or parked because moving them is costly. The mast is usually lowered or laid out so that welds, pins and cylinders can be examined, and the winch test is done with test weights or a calibrated load cell.
