Motor Scraper Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia
Motor scrapers cut, load, haul and spread material in a single cycle, making them efficient on large-area cut and fill work for highways, airfields, industrial city platforms and dam embankments. A tractor unit is linked to the bowl through the gooseneck, and the bowl, apron and ejector all depend on hydraulic cylinders and heavy pins that wear quickly in abrasive soils. Inspection before mobilisation checks these systems and the brakes and steering on a high-speed haul machine.
What we inspect on a motor scraper
- ✓Bowl, apron and ejector: cutting edge and bit wear, apron arms and pins, ejector rollers and tracks, and cracks in the bowl floor and sidewalls
- ✓Gooseneck and articulation: bearing, pin and bushing wear, steering cylinders and an articulation lock
- ✓Bowl lift, apron and ejector cylinders, and hose routing across the gooseneck
- ✓Service and parking brakes on both the tractor and scraper axles, and retarder performance if fitted
- ✓Tyres and wheels: cuts, bulges, pressure and wheel nut security
- ✓Steering performance and secondary steering function
- ✓Push block or push-pull hitch where the scraper works with a pusher dozer
- ✓Cab protective structure, visibility, mirrors, alarms and lights
Common defects we find
- ✓Worn bowl cutting edges and end bits that reduce loading efficiency
- ✓Leaking apron, bowl lift or ejector cylinders
- ✓Worn gooseneck pins and bearings leading to loose steering
- ✓Cracks in the bowl sidewalls or apron arms
- ✓Poor service or parking brake performance
Risks of operating uncertified
- ✓Loss of steering or braking at speed on a haul road, causing a collision or rollover
- ✓Bowl or apron dropping during maintenance when mechanical blocking is not used
- ✓Overturn when turning loaded because of the high centre of gravity of the machine
Testing, standards & frequency
Load / performance test
Not applicable: motor scrapers are not lifting appliances. Service and parking brake performance tests, steering and secondary steering checks, and bowl, apron and ejector hydraulic function tests apply instead.
Inspection interval
Typically at least annually, with pre-mobilisation checks and more frequent re-inspection where client or site rules require.
Standards referenced
- ISO 3471 (roll-over protective structures)
- ISO 3450 (braking systems of rubber-tyred machines)
- ISO 5010 (steering requirements for rubber-tyred machines)
- ISO 20474 series (earth-moving machinery safety)

FAQs
When are motor scrapers used instead of excavators and trucks?+
They are chosen for large-area cut and fill earthmoving over medium haul distances, where one machine can load, haul and spread. For tight or selective excavation, excavators and dump trucks are generally more suitable.
What is the gooseneck on a motor scraper?+
The gooseneck is the articulated connection between the tractor unit and the scraper bowl. It carries steering and drawbar loads, so its pins, bearings and cylinders are important inspection points.
