Vertical Mast Lift Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia

A vertical mast lift raises a small one- or two-person platform straight up a telescoping mast, and many models are push-around units that are moved by hand and then stabilised with outriggers. In Saudi Arabia they are favoured for lighting, HVAC and fire-system maintenance in malls, warehouses, hospitals and plant buildings where narrow aisles or finished floors rule out larger machines. Because the units are light and often moved around a site by non-specialists, third-party inspection confirms that the mast, stabilisers and lowering systems are still in safe condition.

What we inspect on a vertical mast lift

  • ✓Mast sections for straightness and damage, and wear-pad condition, with smooth travel through the full height
  • ✓Lifting mechanism: hoist chains or cables, sheaves, hydraulic ram, and the lowering valve or brake
  • ✓Outriggers or stabilisers, their locking mechanism, and the interlock that stops lifting if they are not set
  • ✓Tilt or level sensor and any floor-slope indicator, with the alarm or cut-out confirmed
  • ✓Platform guardrail, gate, load rating and any limit on the materials that may be carried
  • ✓Battery, charger and electrical controls, including emergency stop, emergency lowering and descent alarm
  • ✓Wheels, castors, parking brakes, push handles and the transport lock used when moving the unit retracted
  • ✓Capacity plate and warnings, and drive and steering function on self-propelled models

Common defects we find

  • ✓Bent or damaged mast sections and worn wear pads that cause binding or platform sway
  • ✓Stretched hoist chains or frayed cables, and a lowering valve that creeps
  • ✓A bypassed or damaged outrigger interlock, or missing outrigger pads
  • ✓Weak batteries, faulty chargers or failed emergency lowering devices
  • ✓Damaged castors or brakes that allow the unit to roll with workers on board

Risks of operating uncertified

  • ✓Tip-over when outriggers are not set or the floor is uneven
  • ✓Platform drop from a failed chain, cable or lowering valve
  • ✓Trapping of the operator when the mast jams and emergency lowering does not work

Testing, standards & frequency

Load / performance test

Typically a rated-load test at 100%-125% of platform capacity depending on the standard and client, performed with the stabilisers set and the platform raised through its full travel, together with checks of the tilt and lowering devices.

Inspection interval

Typically at least annually, with a pre-start check each shift, additional inspection after the unit is dropped, struck or heavily used, and re-inspection before mobilisation where client or site rules require.

Standards referenced

  • ANSI/SAIA A92.20 (design, calculations, safety requirements and test methods for MEWPs)
  • EN 280 (mobile elevating work platforms - design calculations, stability, safety, examinations and tests)
  • Manufacturer specifications and load charts

FAQs

Are vertical mast lifts covered by the same inspection rules as boom lifts?+

In general yes, because they are classed as mobile elevating work platforms, so periodic examination and pre-use checks apply, although the checklist focuses on the mast and stabilisers rather than a boom.

Can a push-around mast lift be used outdoors?+

Only if the manufacturer's rating allows it and the wind, ground and stabiliser requirements can be met. Many models are rated for indoor use only, so check the manual and data plate before taking one onto an open site.
