Trencher Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia
Trenchers cut narrow, consistent trenches for pipelines, cable, irrigation and telecom ducts, using either a digging chain or a rock wheel on ride-on and walk-behind machines. They are used on solar farm cabling, utility corridors and agricultural projects across Saudi Arabia, often in hard or rocky ground that wears teeth and picks rapidly. The exposed chain or wheel makes guards, emergency stops and operator presence controls the most critical safety items.
What we inspect on a trencher
- ✓Digging chain or wheel: chain links, pitch elongation, teeth or picks and tooth holders, plus sprocket wear
- ✓Boom frame, pivot pins and boom lift cylinders, and chain tension and idler condition
- ✓Digging drive: gearbox, hydrostatic drive and chain drive sprockets, for leaks and noise
- ✓Guards and shields: chain guards, boom covers and spoil conveyor or auger shields in place and secure
- ✓Emergency stop on the machine and any remote control, and operator presence or dead-man controls
- ✓Travel system: tracks or wheels, steering, parking brake and stabilisers where fitted
- ✓Hydraulic hoses, fittings and cylinders, and boom transport lock
- ✓Operator station: protective structure on ride-on units, seat belt, visibility, dust and noise controls, alarms and fire extinguisher
Common defects we find
- ✓Worn or missing teeth, picks and tooth holders
- ✓Elongated digging chain and worn sprockets
- ✓Missing, damaged or modified chain guards and shields
- ✓Inoperative emergency stop or operator presence controls
- ✓Leaking boom lift cylinders or damaged hydraulic hoses
Risks of operating uncertified
- ✓Entanglement or amputation injuries from the digging chain or wheel when guards or emergency stops fail
- ✓Ejected teeth or rock fragments striking the operator or bystanders
- ✓Uncontrolled boom lowering onto people during maintenance or transport because of a failed cylinder or missing lock
Testing, standards & frequency
Load / performance test
Not applicable: trenchers are not lifting appliances. Functional tests typically include digging chain or wheel rotation, boom raise and lower, hydraulic pressure checks, and emergency stop and operator presence control tests.
Inspection interval
Typically at least annually, with pre-mobilisation checks and more frequent re-inspection where client or site rules require.
Standards referenced
- ISO 20474 series (earth-moving machinery safety)
- OSHA 29 CFR 1926
- Manufacturer specifications and operating manuals
Part of our Heavy Equipment Testing & Inspection service. You receive an inspection report, Certificate of Conformity and inspection tag for passing equipment.

FAQs
What guards should a chain trencher have?+
A chain trencher should have secure guards over the digging chain, boom and spoil conveyor, and these must not be removed or modified. The manufacturer's manual specifies the exact guarding for each model.
Does a trencher inspection include checking for buried services?+
No. An inspection covers the machine itself, whereas locating buried cables and pipes is a site procedure carried out before digging begins. Both are needed for safe trenching.
