Steam Boiler Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia

Steam boilers supply process steam and heating in food and beverage plants, laundries, hospitals, petrochemical and manufacturing facilities across Saudi Arabia, and are fired by gas or diesel under automatic control. A boiler stores a large amount of energy as hot pressurised water, and its safety depends on working water-level controls, relief valves and burner safeguards, as well as on tube and shell condition. Third-party inspection examines both the pressure parts and the protective devices that stop a fault becoming an explosion.

What we inspect on a steam boiler

  • ✓Data plate and manufacturer data report: maximum allowable working pressure, heating surface and steaming capacity.
  • ✓Safety valves: set pressures, lift test or accumulation test record, discharge pipe routed safely, and no isolation valve in the line.
  • ✓Low-water cutoff and water level controls: float or probe chambers blown down, gauge glass, and trip tested to the cutoff level.
  • ✓Burner management and flame safeguard: pre-purge, flame failure response time, fuel shut-off valves and high steam pressure cutout.
  • ✓Waterside examination through manholes and handholes: scale, pitting, oxygen corrosion, and thickness of tubes and shell where accessible.
  • ✓Fireside examination: furnace, tube sheets, refractory, casing and stack for cracking, bagging, overheating or hot spots.
  • ✓Feedwater pumps, nonreturn and stop valves, blowdown valves and water treatment log for hardness, TDS, pH and oxygen scavenger control.
  • ✓Pressure gauges, boiler house ventilation, fuel train, and leaks at gaskets, mountings and handhole covers.

Common defects we find

  • ✓Scale or deposits from poor feedwater treatment causing tube overheating.
  • ✓Low-water cutoff stuck, bypassed or failing its blowdown test.
  • ✓Safety valve seized, leaking or set above the permitted pressure.
  • ✓Refractory or insulation damage leaving hot spots on the furnace or casing.
  • ✓Flame safeguard or burner interlocks bypassed, or purge cycle shortened.

Risks of operating uncertified

  • ✓Boiler explosion from loss of water, overpressure or a stuck safety valve.
  • ✓Release of scalding steam and hot water from failed tubes, joints or gauge glass.
  • ✓Furnace explosion if unburned fuel accumulates after a burner or flame safeguard failure.

Testing, standards & frequency

Load / performance test

Not applicable: a boiler is not load tested in the lifting sense. A hydrostatic test is typically required after repair or alteration at a pressure set by the code, together with a safety valve set-pressure check and a functional proof test of the low-water cutoff and flame safeguards.

Inspection interval

Typically at least annually for the safety valve and controls check, with an internal inspection at a frequency set by the applicable rules, insurer or client, and an extra inspection after repair, alteration or a long shutdown.

Standards referenced

  • ASME BPVC Section I (power boilers)
  • ASME BPVC Section VII (recommended guidelines for the care of power boilers)
  • ASME CSD-1 (controls and safety devices for automatically fired boilers, where applicable)
  • National Board Inspection Code (NBIC), where adopted

FAQs

What is checked during a steam boiler inspection?+

Inspectors examine the pressure parts inside and out, then prove the safety valves, water-level controls and burner safeguards. They also review the water treatment and maintenance records.

Can a boiler be operated if the low-water cutoff is not working?+

It should not be, because that device is the last protection against overheating when the water level drops. A boiler with a failed or bypassed cutoff is normally taken out of service until it is repaired and re-tested.
