Hydrotest Pump Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia
A hydrotest pump is the high-pressure pump used to fill and pressurise pipelines, vessels, heat exchangers, hoses and tanks to prove strength and leak tightness during construction, shutdowns and commissioning in Saudi Arabia. The integrity of the pressure test depends on the test equipment itself: a pump or hose rated below the test pressure, or an uncalibrated gauge, can invalidate the test or injure the crew. Inspection of the pump, hoses, relief valve and gauges gives the test a reliable and safe basis.
What we inspect on a hydrotest pump
- ✓Pump and driver data plate: maximum discharge pressure and flow, compared with the planned test pressure and the drive air or power supply.
- ✓Pressure gauges and recorders: current calibration certificate traceable to a standard, a range suited to the test pressure, and readable dials.
- ✓Relief valve on the pump discharge: set pressure confirmed below the equipment and test limits, with a recent bench test record.
- ✓High-pressure hoses, hard piping and fittings: pressure rating, test certificate, kinks, abrasion, damaged end connections and condition of whip-check restraints.
- ✓Isolation, bleed and check valves: seat leakage that prevents the system holding pressure, and valve ratings suited to the maximum test pressure.
- ✓Pump packing, seals and plungers or pistons for leaks, and suction strainer or filter condition.
- ✓Water tank, fill and injection arrangements: clean test water and corrosion inhibitor or biocide dosing where the procedure requires.
- ✓Skid frame, lifting points and guarding, and a functional pressure and hold test of the complete test rig.
Common defects we find
- ✓Gauges without a valid calibration certificate or with a range far too high for the test pressure.
- ✓Hoses or fittings of unknown or inadequate pressure rating, or without whip-check restraints.
- ✓Relief valve missing, set above the safe test limit, or seized.
- ✓Leaking packing, check valves or isolation valves that prevent a stable pressure hold.
- ✓Blocked suction strainers or contaminated test water carrying debris into the system under test.
Risks of operating uncertified
- ✓Sudden release of stored energy when a hose or fitting fails under test pressure, with violent hose whip.
- ✓A false pass or false failure from an inaccurate gauge, leaving an unsound system in service.
- ✓Fluid injection injury from a high-pressure pinhole leak on a hose or fitting.
Testing, standards & frequency
Load / performance test
Not applicable: a hydrotest pump is not load tested like lifting equipment. A functional pressure test is typically carried out instead, raising pressure to the working pressure or a rated maximum set by the procedure, then checking relief valve lift, gauge accuracy against a calibrated reference and leak-free pressure holding.
Inspection interval
Typically before each test campaign or mobilisation, with gauge calibration at the period set by the client or test procedure, and after any repair or change of hose or fitting.
Standards referenced
- ASME B31.3 (process piping, including pressure testing)
- ASME BPVC Section VIII (hydrostatic test requirements for pressure vessels)
- ASME B40.100 (pressure gauges and gauge attachments)

FAQs
Why must gauges on a hydrotest be calibrated?+
The pass or fail decision on a pipeline or vessel rests entirely on the pressure reading, so an inaccurate gauge makes the test meaningless. Calibration certificates are normally attached to the test package.
What safety checks matter most on a hydrotest rig?+
The relief valve set pressure, the pressure rating of hoses and fittings, and hose restraints, because a failure at test pressure releases a lot of energy at once. Keeping personnel clear of the test area during pressurisation is also standard practice.
