Skid Steer Loader Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia
Skid steer loaders are compact, four-wheel-drive machines that turn by varying wheel speeds side to side, and they run a wide range of attachments such as pallet forks, sweepers, breakers and augers. They are used in construction yards, camps, warehouses and facility maintenance across Saudi Arabia, often in tight spaces with pedestrians nearby. Inspection concentrates on the operator restraint and interlocks, the lift arm support and the attachment coupler, as these determine whether the operator and bystanders are protected.
What we inspect on a skid steer loader
- ✓Lift arms and loader frame: pivot pins, bushings, welds, and a lift arm support or safety strut that engages correctly
- ✓Operator restraint: seat bar or restraint, and the interlocks that lock lift, tilt and traction until the operator is secured
- ✓Cab protective structure: ROPS and FOPS, door or front enclosure, and seat belt
- ✓Quick-attach coupler: lock levers or hydraulic locks, wedge wear, and condition of the fitted attachment such as forks
- ✓Drive chain cases and axles: chain case oil, sprocket wear, wheel bolts and tyre condition
- ✓Auxiliary hydraulics: flat-face couplers, hoses and case drain connections
- ✓Hydraulic leaks at cylinders, hoses and valves, and lift or tilt drift
- ✓Parking brake, lights, reverse alarm, mirrors or camera and fire extinguisher
Common defects we find
- ✓Defeated or inoperative seat bar and lift or tilt interlocks
- ✓Worn quick-attach wedges and lock levers allowing the attachment to loosen
- ✓Leaking drive chain cases and worn sprockets
- ✓Cracked lift arm welds or worn lift arm pins
- ✓Missing or damaged cab door or front enclosure
Risks of operating uncertified
- ✓Operator crushed between the lift arm and frame when the restraint or interlock fails or no lift arm support is used
- ✓An attachment or load falling from a worn quick-attach coupler
- ✓Tip-over when lifting high or crossing slopes beyond the rated operating capacity
Testing, standards & frequency
Load / performance test
Not applicable: skid steer loaders are not rated lifting appliances. Inspectors typically verify the rated operating capacity plate and perform interlock, hydraulic and brake function tests; lifting accessories used with the loader, such as hooks or forks, are examined separately.
Inspection interval
Typically at least annually, and on each rental handover or pre-mobilisation, with more frequent checks where client or site rules require.
Standards referenced
- ISO 3471 (roll-over protective structures)
- ISO 3449 (falling-object protective structures)
- ISO 10533 (lift-arm support devices)
- ISO 20474 series (earth-moving machinery safety)

FAQs
Why are interlocks so important on a skid steer loader?+
The operator sits inside the lift arm area, so interlocks stop the arms and tilt from moving unless the operator is restrained. A defeated interlock is one of the most serious defects an inspector can find.
Do skid steer attachments need separate inspection?+
Yes, attachments such as forks, buckets and breakers should be checked for structural condition and coupler compatibility. Any lifting accessory is typically examined separately under the applicable lifting standards.
