Pick and Carry Crane Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia
Pick and carry cranes are compact articulated mobile cranes designed to lift a load and carry it across a yard or work area, making them popular in fabrication shops, laydown yards, power stations and plant maintenance in Saudi Arabia. Their ability to travel with a suspended load puts extra stress on the articulation joint, tyres and brakes. Independent inspection checks that the carry-mode limits, structure and braking all remain within the manufacturer's design.
What we inspect on a pick and carry crane
- ✓Articulation centre pivot, bearings and steering cylinders for wear, cracks and play
- ✓Service and parking brake performance under load, and brake system leaks
- ✓Tyre condition and inflation pressure, which directly affect carry-mode stability
- ✓Boom sections, wear pads and extension, plus luffing cylinder pins and holding valves
- ✓LMI configuration for static pick and for carry-mode capacities, including the display of the correct chart
- ✓Hoist rope, drum, brake and hook block with safety latch
- ✓Chassis frame, counterweight mounting and any outriggers or stabilisers fitted
- ✓Cab controls, travel speed limiting and warning devices such as the travel alarm and beacon
Common defects we find
- ✓Excess play in the articulation pivot, causing poor steering control while carrying loads
- ✓Worn brake linings or air or hydraulic brake leaks reducing stopping power
- ✓Under-inflated or damaged tyres reducing carry-mode stability
- ✓LMI not switched to the correct pick or carry mode and chart
- ✓Luffing cylinder or holding valve leakage letting the boom creep down
Risks of operating uncertified
- ✓Tip-over when travelling with a load on uneven ground or beyond the carry-mode limits
- ✓Loss of braking or steering control while moving with a suspended load near people and plant
- ✓Boom drop from a failed holding valve or cylinder seal while carrying a load
Testing, standards & frequency
Load / performance test
A rated-capacity load test is typically carried out at 100%-125% of rated capacity at selected radii, depending on the standard and client, with carry-mode capacities and braking checked only within the manufacturer's stated limits.
Inspection interval
Typically at least annually, with additional checks before use on a new site or where machines travel regularly with suspended loads.
Standards referenced
- ASME B30.5 Mobile and Locomotive Cranes
- EN 13000 Cranes - Mobile cranes
- OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart CC (Cranes and Derricks in Construction)

FAQs
Can a pick and carry crane travel with a suspended load?+
Yes, but only within the carry-mode capacities, speed limits and ground conditions in the manufacturer's load chart. Those capacities are lower than static ones, so the inspection confirms the correct chart, tyres and brakes.
Does a pick and carry crane need a load test?+
Most clients expect one at initial commissioning, when coming onto a new site or after major repair, usually with carry-mode functions checked as applicable. Requirements depend on the standard and client.
