Knuckle Boom Loader Crane Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia

Knuckle boom loader cranes are hydraulic articulating cranes mounted on flatbed trucks or trailers, widely used in Saudi Arabia for loading pipes, containers, pallets, scaffolding and site cabins. The multiple pivot joints, hydraulic cylinders and extension sections work hard with frequent loading cycles, and wear at pins and bushes is often invisible to the operator. Independent inspection checks the structure, hydraulic safety valves and overload protection before the crane is relied upon.

What we inspect on a knuckle boom loader crane

  • ✓Knuckle joint, column and boom pivot pins and bushes for wear, play and securing hardware
  • ✓Extension boom sections, slide pads and hydraulic or manual fly jib extensions
  • ✓Lifting, knuckle and extension cylinders with their pilot-operated holding valves and hose-burst protection
  • ✓Slewing mechanism, whether rack and pinion or slew ring, and its brake and bearing play
  • ✓Stabiliser legs, extension cylinders and the stabiliser position and interlock sensors
  • ✓Overload protection or stability monitoring system and pressure relief valve settings
  • ✓Radio or cable remote control, emergency stop function and cab-side control levers
  • ✓Hook, hook latch, winch or hook rope if fitted, and crane-to-chassis mounting

Common defects we find

  • ✓Worn pins and bushes causing play and uncontrolled boom movement under load
  • ✓Hydraulic hoses chafed or leaking at the cylinder ends and swivel joints
  • ✓Holding valve leaking so the boom or cylinder slowly creeps down
  • ✓Overload relief valve or electronic overload system tampered with or out of adjustment
  • ✓Remote control not stopping all functions when the emergency stop is pressed

Risks of operating uncertified

  • ✓Sudden boom drop from a burst hose or failed holding valve, with crushing risk to operators and ground crews
  • ✓Truck overturning when stabilisers are not fully extended or the overload system fails
  • ✓Load swing or collision when worn pins give play or the remote control fails

Testing, standards & frequency

Load / performance test

A load test is typically carried out at 100%-125% of rated capacity at selected positions, including maximum outreach, depending on the standard and client, with the holding valves and overload protection verified during the test.

Inspection interval

Typically at least annually, with frequent operator checks and re-inspection after any impact, overload or major hydraulic repair.

Standards referenced

  • ASME B30.22 Articulating Boom Cranes
  • EN 12999 Cranes - Loader cranes
  • OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart CC (Cranes and Derricks in Construction)
  • Manufacturer specifications and load charts

FAQs

Does a knuckle boom loader crane need load testing?+

Most clients expect a documented load test, typically at or above rated capacity at selected positions, along with checks of the overload protection and holding valves. The precise requirement depends on the standard and client.

Can a loader crane be used to lift personnel?+

Not unless the manufacturer permits it and a suitable personnel basket and procedures are in place. Standard loader cranes are generally designed for material handling only.
