Gas Cylinder and Storage Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia

Compressed and liquefied gas cylinders, including oxygen, acetylene, argon, nitrogen, LPG and breathing air, are used on almost every Saudi fabrication site, plant and workshop. They hold high pressure in a thin shell, and a damaged valve or a cylinder stored with incompatible gases can turn a minor mistake into a fire or a projectile. Independent inspection checks each cylinder, its test status and the storage area against safe handling practice.

What we inspect on a gas cylinder and storage

  • ✓Stamp markings and labels: owner, serial number, gas name, working or test pressure, and the date of the last periodic test.
  • ✓Periodic hydrostatic requalification status, with the next test due date within the interval set by the applicable standard.
  • ✓External shell condition: dents, gouges, arc burns, corrosion, bulges, fire or heat damage and loose or damaged foot rings.
  • ✓Valve and neck: thread damage, valve leaks checked with leak detection fluid, valve protection cap or guard, and any fitted pressure relief device.
  • ✓Regulators, hoses, flashback arrestors and non-return valves on oxygen and fuel gas sets: age, cracks, clamps and correct gas connection.
  • ✓Storage area: segregation of oxidisers from flammable gases and full from empty cylinders, ventilation and distance from heat and ignition sources.
  • ✓Securing arrangements: chains or racks keeping cylinders upright, with acetylene stored and used upright, plus trolleys and transport cages.
  • ✓Signage, firefighting equipment, access control and shading from direct sun in the storage area.

Common defects we find

  • ✓Cylinders past their periodic test date or with unreadable stamping.
  • ✓Valve protection caps or guards missing during storage and transport.
  • ✓Cylinders stored unsecured, or acetylene stored or used lying horizontal.
  • ✓Oxygen and fuel gas cylinders stored together without separation.
  • ✓Dents, gouges, corrosion or arc burns beyond acceptable limits, and leaking valves or damaged regulators.

Risks of operating uncertified

  • ✓A knocked-off valve turning a cylinder into a high-speed projectile.
  • ✓Fire or explosion from fuel gas leaks, or oxygen contacting oil, grease or a hot ignition source.
  • ✓Violent rupture or sudden pressure relief of cylinders caught in a fire, and asphyxiation or toxic exposure when gas escapes in an enclosed store.

Testing, standards & frequency

Load / performance test

Not applicable: a gas cylinder is not load tested. Periodic requalification typically comprises external and internal visual examination and a hydrostatic proof or volumetric expansion test by an approved test station, with storage and handling arrangements verified on site.

Inspection interval

Typically a visual check before each use and storage area inspections monthly or as site rules require, with periodic hydrostatic requalification at intervals commonly in the range of five to ten years depending on the standard, gas and cylinder type.

Standards referenced

  • ISO 6406 (seamless steel gas cylinders, periodic inspection and testing)
  • CGA C-6 (standards for visual inspection of steel compressed gas cylinders)
  • CGA P-1 (safe handling of compressed gases in containers)
  • Saudi Aramco General Instructions (GI), where applicable

FAQs

How do I know if a gas cylinder is still in date for testing?+

The test date is normally stamped on the cylinder shoulder or collar, and the next due date follows from the interval set by the standard and the gas. If the stamp is missing or illegible, treat the cylinder as out of service until it is checked.

Can oxygen and acetylene cylinders be stored together?+

No. Oxidising gases are normally kept apart from flammable gases by a set distance or a fire-resistant barrier, with the exact separation set by the site rules and the safe handling standard in use.
