Crane Hook Block Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia
A crane hook block is the assembly of sheaves, side plates, swivel bearing and hook that carries the load line on mobile, tower and overhead cranes. It must be matched to the crane's rope reeving, number of falls and rated capacity. In rental fleets across Saudi Arabia blocks are often swapped between cranes, so confirming identity, rating and condition independently of the crane is an important part of inspection.
What we inspect on a crane hook block
- ✓Hook throat opening compared with the original or manufacturer dimension, with twist, bending and tip wear assessed against the discard limits
- ✓Hook shank thread, locking nut and retaining pin or plate to confirm the hook is correctly secured, with MPI on the thread where required
- ✓Hook swivel and bearing for free rotation, play, noise and grease condition
- ✓Sheave grooves for wear, size relative to the rope, and rope contact damage to the groove flanks
- ✓Sheave bearings and axle for seizure, wear and securing of the pin
- ✓Side plates, tie bolts, cotter pins and the rope guard for cracks, deformation and missing parts
- ✓Hook latch for spring condition and closing on the throat
- ✓Rope dead end or anchorage, identification plate, weight and safe working load marking relative to the reeving in use
Common defects we find
- ✓Hook throat opened out or tip worn beyond the discard limit
- ✓Locking nut or retaining pin missing or loose on the hook shank
- ✓Seized sheave or worn sheave grooves damaging the wire rope
- ✓Hook latch missing or not closing fully
- ✓Block marking missing, so rating and number of falls cannot be confirmed
Risks of operating uncertified
- ✓Hook straightening or cracking under load and releasing the lift
- ✓Seized sheave or worn groove damaging the rope and causing a rope failure
- ✓Wrong block fitted for the rope size or reeving, overloading the rope or sheaves, or giving a block weight the load chart does not account for
Testing, standards & frequency
Load / performance test
A proof load test is typically carried out at 100%-125% of rated capacity depending on the standard and client, often as part of the crane load test, with MPI or dye penetrant of critical areas where required.
Inspection interval
Typically examined at least annually and at each crane inspection, with a daily visual check by the operator and re-inspection after any overload event or damage, as client or site rules require.
Standards referenced
- ASME B30.10 (Hooks)
- ASME B30.5 (Mobile and Locomotive Cranes)
- ISO 4309 (Cranes - Wire ropes - Care and maintenance, inspection and discard)
- Manufacturer specifications and load charts

FAQs
How can I tell if a crane hook has opened out or been over-stretched?+
Measure the throat opening and compare it with the original dimension from the manufacturer or any punch marks on the hook. Any increase beyond the limit, or visible twist or bending, means the hook must be removed from service.
Does a replacement hook block need its own certificate?+
Yes. The block should come with traceable documentation for its rated capacity and be examined and load tested to confirm it suits the crane and the reeving before use.
