Ultrasonic Testing (UT) & Thickness Gauging in NEOM

Ultrasonic testing sends high-frequency sound into steel and reads the echoes to locate internal flaws and measure remaining thickness. EES uses it for weld UT, plate and forging checks and thickness gauging on structures, tanks, pipework and lifting equipment, where surface methods cannot see the problem. The giga-project in north-west Saudi Arabia, mobilising vast fleets of heavy equipment and workers.

Ultrasonic Testing (UT) in NEOM: local context

At a remote site like NEOM, proof load testing and NDT usually take place at temporary laydown areas and open construction fronts rather than permanent workshops, so access, heat, dust and salt air near the coast all shape timing. EES brings test equipment and NDT technicians to site, plans each test around lift and works programmes, and records results in clear, traceable reports.

What we deliver in NEOM

  • ✓Weld ultrasonic testing with angle-beam probes on butt and T-joints of structures, vessels and pipework, to the technique and testing level in your procedure
  • ✓Straight-beam checks of plate and forgings for laminations and internal flaws, including plate behind lifting lugs and pad-eyes
  • ✓Ultrasonic thickness gauging and corrosion mapping on tanks, vessels, pipework and structural members, compared with the minimum required thickness
  • ✓Checks on pins, shafts and forged parts where an internal flaw or the depth of a crack is in question
  • ✓Calibration on reference blocks, distance-amplitude or time-corrected gain set-up, and re-checks during and at the end of the job
  • ✓Surface preparation and couplant selection suited to hot, dusty or coated surfaces, with probe and surface-temperature limits observed
  • ✓Sizing and recording of indications (position, depth, length, amplitude) and comparison with the specified acceptance criteria

Standards

  • ✓ISO 17640 (ultrasonic testing of welded joints)
  • ✓ASME BPVC Section V (ultrasonic examination) and ASTM E797 (manual pulse-echo thickness measurement)
  • ✓ISO 9712 and ASNT SNT-TC-1A (NDT personnel qualification schemes)
  • ✓Client UT procedure and acceptance criteria

Documentation

  • ✓UT report stating equipment, probes, calibration blocks, technique and scan coverage
  • ✓Thickness readings table with a location map or grid
  • ✓Flaw record with position, depth, length and amplitude, and accept or reject result
  • ✓Instrument calibration and reference-block records

FAQs

Do you provide Ultrasonic Testing (UT) in NEOM?+

Yes. EES provides Ultrasonic Testing (UT) at client sites in NEOM, including The Line, Oxagon and Sindalah. Contact us with your requirement and we will confirm scope and scheduling.

Which standards and documents apply to Ultrasonic Testing (UT) in NEOM?+

Work in NEOM is aligned with the following standards and references: ISO 17640 (ultrasonic testing of welded joints); ASME BPVC Section V (ultrasonic examination) and ASTM E797 (manual pulse-echo thickness measurement); ISO 9712 and ASNT SNT-TC-1A (NDT personnel qualification schemes); Client UT procedure and acceptance criteria. On completion you receive: UT report stating equipment, probes, calibration blocks, technique and scan coverage; Thickness readings table with a location map or grid; Flaw record with position, depth, length and amplitude, and accept or reject result.

What is the difference between UT thickness testing and UT flaw detection?+

Thickness gauging measures how much metal remains, to find corrosion or wear against a minimum required thickness. Flaw detection looks for discontinuities inside the material or weld, such as lack of fusion, slag or laminations, and needs a calibrated set-up and a written technique.

Can UT find weld defects that MPI or dye penetrant would miss?+

Yes, for internal flaws that do not reach the surface, which MPI and penetrant cannot see. For fine surface-breaking cracks the surface methods are often more sensitive, so the choice depends on the defect you need to find and your procedure.
