Jib Crane Inspection & Certification in Saudi Arabia

Jib cranes are fixed lifting devices with a rotating or fixed cantilever arm, mounted on a floor pillar, wall or column and used in workshops, machine bays and loading areas across Saudi industrial sites. They are small and easy to take for granted, yet a loose base, worn pivot or damaged hoist can drop a load with almost no warning. Periodic inspection and testing confirm the foundation, structure and hoist are still within the original design limits.

What we inspect on a jib crane

  • ✓Pillar base plate, anchor bolts, grout and concrete foundation for cracks, corrosion and movement
  • ✓Wall or column bracket fixings and the supporting structure
  • ✓Mast and pivot bearings, including bearing play and smooth rotation
  • ✓Jib arm welds, deflection and end stops for the trolley
  • ✓Trolley wheels, track surface and travel stops
  • ✓Chain or rope hoist, brake, limit switches and electrical controls
  • ✓Hook, latch and the identification plate showing safe working load
  • ✓Rotation stops and the swing brake or friction device where fitted

Common defects we find

  • ✓Loose anchor bolts or cracked foundations under the pillar base
  • ✓Worn pivot bearings creating tilt and a drifting jib arm
  • ✓Cracked welds at the jib to mast connection
  • ✓Damaged trolley wheels or end stops allowing the trolley to run off the arm
  • ✓Hoist brake or limit switch not working, or a safe working load plate that is missing or illegible

Risks of operating uncertified

  • ✓Structural failure or collapse of the jib or mast from weakened anchor bolts or welds
  • ✓Dropped load from a hoist brake, chain or hook failure above workers
  • ✓Trolley running off the arm end when stops are damaged or missing

Testing, standards & frequency

Load / performance test

A load test is typically carried out at 100%-125% of rated capacity with the trolley at maximum outreach, depending on the standard and client, with deflection, brake performance and rotation checked.

Inspection interval

Typically at least annually, with frequent operator checks each shift and re-inspection after any overload, impact or relocation.

Standards referenced

  • ASME B30.16 Overhead Hoists (Underhung)
  • ASME B30.10 Hooks
  • Manufacturer specifications and load charts

FAQs

How is a jib crane's foundation checked?+

Inspectors examine the base plate, anchor bolts, grout and concrete for cracks or movement and compare them with the manufacturer's or engineer's specification. Loose bolts or a cracked pad are normally treated as a reason to stop use.

Does the hoist on a jib crane need its own inspection?+

The hoist and trolley are inspected together with the jib, but are often listed separately on the report, along with the hooks and any lifting accessories used.
